Bilva, also known as Bael, Bilvam, Bengal quince, or wood apple (Aegle marmelos), is a deciduous shrub or small to medium-sized tree native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, and is widely cultivated in Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Malaysia. Growing up to 13 meters tall, it features slender drooping branches and a somewhat sparse crown. The Bilva tree holds immense medicinal, spiritual, and religious significance, particularly in Hinduism, where its fruits and leaves are considered sacred offerings to deities like Lord Shiva. Due to this, the tree is referred to as Shiva druma or the tree of Shiva in ancient scriptures. Various parts of the tree, including the fruit, rind, leaves, and root bark, are traditionally used in Ayurvedic preparations. The Bilva fruit, especially when it begins to ripen, is valued in Ayurveda for its hot potency, bitter taste, and light, dry, and astringent properties, which are believed to enhance digestive power and rekindle the digestive fire. The tree is deeply rooted in both Ayurvedic practices and cultural traditions, symbolizing its significance in both health and spirituality.
